Off to teach the first day of fall semester @vanderbiltu classes. In Covid I have finally found my look: Business casual astronaut (thx @rufusgriscom ) We have 6200 undergrads back on campus—90 percent of the student body. Nervewracking? More than a little. But I’m grateful for the chance to show up for Gen Z. To paraphrase @barackobama ‘s convention speech last week: “To the young people...you are this country’s dreams fulfilled. You can give our democracy new meaning. You are the missing ingredients. The ones who will decide if our country lives up to its creed.” And I’ve never been so grateful for polymer shields. #wecandothis

Big day today! I’m so excited to announce the launch of Kidizenship, a non-partisan platform for political tweens and teens. The goal: to give kids age 8-18 a voice in the 2020 elections. We’re starting with a series of creative contests on @instagram Contest # 1: Design your own American flag. We’ve got a killer panel of judges including @betoorourke Follow @kidizenshipUSA and head to Kidizenship.com for details! Link in bio. The idea for this began just after President Trump took office in 2017, in our living room, where we gathered kids from about 20 families of all political stripes to discuss the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens. Over a few months we built a kind of Boy Scouts/Girls Scouts troupe for politics. Now it‘s evolving into an online civics magazine and launching with a series of creative contests. “Fly Your Flag” will be followed by: Write Your Hero. Sing Your Anthem. Champion Your Cause. Make Your Speech. Build Your Monument. If the idea strikes a chord, please share Kidizenship.com with your schools and teachers — and rally your neighbors and kids and nieces and nephews to join the contests! The most important voices in the 2020 election are the citizens still too young to vote. We want to give them a place to tell their truth and share their ideas. I’m excited to be working on this with @hollykorbey @bettyrockr @drewrollo and @yveassad (Yve took this gorgeous photo in slide 1). I’m grateful to @msalicerandall who helped me dream up this idea and @mksmeacham @songsherpa @onefamilyonearth and @clarelevy who have brainstormed it over the years. Before the pandemic, 37 million Americans lived in food-insecure households. Black and Latinx families were more than twice as likely to be food insecure as white families. The Covid crisis is making these disparities worse. How do we solve racism in the American food system? I discuss the origins and realities of unequal food access, the human health impacts and potential solutions with UT-Austin professor Ashanté Reese in my latest @bloomberg piece. Ashanté is co-editor of the book, Black Food Matters, forthcoming in October. She has a megawatt mind and has deepened and broadened the way I think about food justice. Link in bio.
